XP

In this post, learn how experience (XP) is measured and calculated, and how it affects your progress as a Trainer.

Last updated:

What is Experience (XP)?

In short, experience (also known as “XP”) is a currency you earn for all kinds of actions on masterball. When you reach a certain experience milestone—for example, 100 XP at Level 1—your Trainer Level increases by one.

Which actions are rewarded with XP?

  • Adding a card to your collection (the amount of XP varies; see below)
  • Becoming friends with another Trainer (both Trainers receive XP)
  • Adding a social media profile
  • Complete an achievement (varies)

How does the level progression work?

Currently, the progression is quite simple and relatively linear. The underlying formula we use is:

XP required = 50 + (Level² * 50)

In plain language, this means that each level initially requires 50 XP to advance, and then 50 XP per level multiplied by 2. This results in the following progression:

Current LevelNext LevelTotal XP requiredXP within this level
12100100
23250150
34500250
45850350
561300450
............
9104100850
............
2425288502350
............
49501201004850

The linear progression is particularly evident in the last column. Each new level requires the same amount of XP as the previous level plus 100 XP.

Note: We reserve the right to make changes to the progression system at any time and to recalculate XP accordingly. We will, of course, openly communicate any changes on our Discord and on our blog.

Can I also lose XP?

Yes, you can also lose experience. As we’ve defined it, experience isn’t a one-way street. The only thing to keep in mind is that some actions can be undone, causing you to lose the experience you've gained prior. For example, you add a card and receive 5 XP; if you remove the card from your collection, you lose those 5 XP.

Important: You can never go into the negative in terms of XP or lose more XP than you’ve previously earned. Inactivity or similar factors also won’t cause you to lose XP. Ending friendships doesn’t affect your XP either, as well as no longer fulfilling the requirements for an achievement. Once it's earned, you'll keep its rewards.

What actions cause me to lose XP?

  • Removing a card from your collection (the amount corresponds to the variant)
  • Removing a social media profile

How is the XP value of a card calculated?

Essentially, a card’s XP is calculated based on a combination of many static factors associated with the card. Since a card’s value can fluctuate significantly, we don’t base the XP on the current or average market price, but rather on the variant, the card’s rarity, and its name or keywords such as “ex” or “V.”

The calculation system is structured in such a way that the rarity level determines the base XP value. The variant is then added to the base value. The resulting value is then multiplied by keywords and extended rarity levels. Finally, the value is rounded up to the nearest whole number. This ensures a fair distribution of XP across all possible cards.

The amount of XP and the multipliers may change over the course of development, as we gain experience with the system and strive to continuously create a rewarding and fair system. We will, of course, openly communicate any changes to the behavior and amount of XP on our Discord and on our blog.

Note: We reserve the right to omit certain details regarding the calculation of the XP value (i.e., a complete list of all rarities) to prevent replication.

What are the benefits of leveling up and earning XP?

Basically, your level is just an indicator of your activity and engagement on masterball. We also use experience to display a sort of leaderboard on the “Trainer” overview, where the most experienced Trainers appear at the top by default. Who has collected the most? Who is the most active on the platform and within the community? And who has been around the longest? All of this can sometimes be gauged by the amount of experience earned. Some achievements also depend on reaching a certain level.

Beyond that, however, the level is just a number meant to motivate you to stay active in your hobby.

Is there an XP limit?

No, there is no specific XP limit. Currently, however, there is a level cap of 50—but that can change at any time.
